The Importance of Manual Handling and Fire safety Training in the Workplace

Occupational health and safety is vitally important as it ensures employees are suitably administered, trained and managed according to the roles they need to carry out. To ensure these requirements are met, employers are legally obliged to send their employees on relevant health and safety training courses. Two of the most important topics which employees in all industries need to be trained in are manual handling and fire safety.

Manual handling training

Ensuring employees are aware of correct moving and lifting techniques is a fundamental element of occupational health and safety management. According to recent statistics, incorrect moving and lifting is responsible for more than 10% of all major injuries within UK workplaces. Therefore, it is vital for any employee whose role involves the handling or moving of objects receives suitable training in procedures which will minimise any risk of injury.

Fire safety training

Basic fire safety training is another integral aspect of occupational health and safety management as fires can happen in even the most organised of working environments. There are many potential causes of fire within all types of workplaces; therefore business owners are responsible for ensuring that they and their employees are comprehensively trained in fire prevention measures and fire safety procedures. Indeed, all employees within a workplace must be well-versed in methods to deal with fires such as the correct fire extinguishers to use, the location of fire exits and how to raise the alarm.

The Importance of Fire Risk Assessments

There are times when a large scale accident such as a fire can be devastating enough to put a company out of business. Therefore, it is essential that all companies minimise the risk of a fire happening on their premises as much as they can. Specific health and safety risk assessments can be incredibly beneficial in this respect as they can not only help to identify potential fire risks within in a workplace but also determine how best to prevent them from happening.

Professional expertise

Any company that employs more than four people is legally obliged to carry out a fire safety risk assessment on their premises. Fire risk assessments must be undertaken by a professional risk assessor as their expertise will enable them to identify every fire risk in a building and determine the action needed to minimise those risks.

Specific checks

The assessor will methodically check that a company is in accordance with the latest fire safety regulations and identify any potential safety risks on the premises. They will also check to ensure essential fire safety measures such as fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers and emergency lighting systems are all working correctly.

Recommendations

Once they have finished their assessment, the assessor will produce a detailed report that will recommend improvements that can be made to increase fire safety within the workplace. Adhering to these recommendations will show that the company in question is prepared to act with due diligence and compliance.

What to Expect from a Fire Safety Course

Every company has a legal responsibility to ensure they have designated fire exits and that selected managers and supervisors obtain a fire safety certificate.

Any company that fails to adhere to their legal responsibilities could ultimately face serious consequences, as they could be subject to an unlimited fine plus imprisonment, director disqualifications and publicity of the prosecutions.

Therefore, every company should ensure that they obtain a NEBOSH fire certificate, and participants on the fire safety course will be required to attend a five day programme which will require them to undertake six modules in Fire Safety and Risk Management and they will then have to take a two hour written exam.

Following the Fire Safety and Risk Management modules, participants will then be required to undertake a three hour practical examination.

Here at Phoenix Health and Safety you can attend a fire safety course at one of our four locations in Manchester, Bristol, London and Birmingham. We are committed to helping our delegates pass the fire safety course the first time, which is why we aim to make each module incredibly fun and informative.

Our fire safety tutors are extremely friendly and professional, so you can rest assured that you will receive unrivalled support during every stage of the course.

If you would like to know more about NEBOSH fire certificates and our fire safety courses, we advise that you thoroughly browse our website or contact us today for further information.

Office Health and Safety

Working in an office may be far less dangerous than working on a construction site or working at height, but there are still hazards to consider. Fire risk assessments must still be made and the general wellbeing of each and every member of staff considered. In fact, there are some concerns that are considerably more serious in an office than in most workshops.

In terms of health and safety over an extended period, one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment in the modern workplace is the computer. Sudden accidents are rare but prolonged use can cause serious harm. Carpal tunnel syndrome, back and neck problems, and even arthritis can be brought on by computer use, particularly if the workstation in question is not properly set up for that individual user.

First aid for the office is usually relatively simple. Single day emergency first aid training courses may be all that is required for nominated persons- a visitor or employee may still experience a heart attack on the premises, no matter how safe they are, and minor accidents can occur in any home or workplace, so businesses are still required to maintain some first-aid expertise.

Health and safety consultants can help in any industry. Whether workers are in an office environment, a warehouse, on a construction site or a mix of all three, Phoenix can ensure health and safety compliance. If new solutions do need to be found we’re well placed to develop them, and assist with any implementation issues that may arise.
