The purpose of IOSH

Those who have been through health and safety training courses or are in the process of booking them may well have come across references to IOSH. However, not everyone knows exactly what this body stands for.Short for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, its history dates back to 1945 when the Institution of Industrial Safety Officers (IISO) was formed from a division of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Around 36 years after this point, in 1981, the IISO changed its name to its current moniker. It aims to create a world in which work is safe, healthy and sustainable and describes itself as a leading international health and safety body. As part of this, it offers health and safety advice. The IOSH works to make sure that people are at the heart of health and safety and to advance high levels of professionalism. Meanwhile, it is also keen to champion pragmatic risk management based on professional health and safety support.Other tasks the body is involved in include sponsoring research and sharing knowledge throughout the industry.Meanwhile, in 2002, the organisation was awarded a Royal Charter and three years after this, it began to award Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner status to recognise individual professionalism. If you are keen to find out more about the various health and safety training and consulting options available to you, simply take a look around the rest of our website here at Phoenix Health & Safety, or get in touch with our team by phone.

Staying Safe in the Construction Industry

Even though British construction workers are renowned for their diligent work practices, working in the construction industry is still a very risky business and accidents do still happen. Thankfully however, implementing effective safety procedures on a construction site can help to significantly minimise the risk of any accidents occurring. One of the best ways to learn how to implement such procedures is to take an IOSH Managing Safely course. This course covers many different but wholly relevant issues that relate directly to the concept of safe management practices. As well as learning about the importance of risk assessments, delegates also learn about other pertinent topics such as the legal responsibilities involved in businesses, how to investigate accidents effectively and how to protect the environment. Delegates are assessed throughout by way of practical assessments and written examinations and receive an IOSH certificate once they have satisfactorily completed the course.Although IOSH Managing Safely courses are primarily designed for managers who already have some safety responsibilities, they can also be of great benefit to other employees who are looking to improve their prospects and learn more about the safety side of the industry.Encouraging workers to take an IOSH course is one of the very best ways to increase awareness of Health and Safety and therefore minimise the risk of accidents on your construction site. What you need to know about the IOSH

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is an extremely important organisation when it comes to workplace safety and as such it is helpful if you know something about it.A chartered body for health and safety professionals, it has more than 39,000 individual members and claims to be the biggest professional health and safety organisation in the world. Here at Phoenix Health and Safety we offer an IOSH managing safely certificate and IOSH managing safely courses, among other such learning programmes. Meanwhile, the institute is committed to reducing the number of people who are killed or made ill as a result of what they do for a living. Statistics cited by the organisation suggest that across the globe, two million people die each year as a result of failures in health and safety.Indeed, in the European Union alone, someone dies while at work every three-and-a-half minutes. As part of its efforts to reduce such statistics it lobbies governments on law and policy and it accredits qualifications for its members, as well as providing guidance, developing resources and running courses. In addition, as well as helping to raise standards in businesses it also develops health and safety training courses for schools and it is involved in the running of campaigns to help raise awareness.Of course, the IOSH is not the only relevant body when it comes to safety issues. However, it is one of the most significant. If you think you could benefit from IOSH courses and other such safety programmes, simply take a look around our website or get in touch.

IOSH Working and Managing Safely

Health and safety courses can help managers and senior staff develop health and safety plans which, if carried out to the letter, will ensure safety in the workplace. However, everyone on site needs to do their part- customers, visitors, and members of staff- and stay within the stated guidelines. No supervisor can be everywhere and sooner or later, individuals need to understand the importance of safe behaviour in the workplace.

That’s what the IOSH working and IOSH managing safely certificate are all about. Designed for staff and line managers respectively, those completing these courses will come away with a deeper understanding of the importance of health and safety in the workplace, and of staying within the guidelines given out by senior management and by the Health and Safety Executive.

The Managing Safely course is intended to help all those with direct management roles ensure that policies are followed within their departments, and that new information is disseminated quickly and efficiently. Participants will learn about safety management systems and about the key points of the Health and Safety at Work Act. At the finish of the course they should be able to explain the concept of ‘working safely’ to other staff and ensure that best practices are followed by all employees under their supervision.

The Working Safely course will give any member of staff a basic grounding in health and safety issues. It introduces the concepts to safety at work, hazards, risk, and risk management. On completion, participants should be able to work safely under appropriate guidance and help managers spread the word about health and safety.

IOSH Managing Safely Courses for the Construction Industry

Jobs in the construction industry contain many risks. Although everything is done to minimise these risks, accidents can still occur. When an accident happens in a construction environment, it can amount to a huge amount of extra costs that may not have been budgeted for. By implementing safety procedures around a construction site, the occurrence of accidents can be minimised. An IOSH Managing Safely course can help prepare people for working in the construction industry and the risks involved.

The IOSH course is one of the most popular and accessible health and safety courses available. Although the course is aimed at managers with some safety responsibilities, but it is equally suitable for directors or safety officers in lower risk organisations. Candidates are appraised throughout the course via written examinations and practical assessments and, on completion, will receive an IOSH Managing Safely certificate.

The course covers a wide variety of relevant issues, starting with the concept of managing safely. Course attendants will then learn about risk assessment, including how to identify risks, then assessing and controlling them. The course will also cover the legal responsibilities of businesses, how to investigate accidents and how to protect the environment.

Encouraging employees to take an IOSH course is a great way to promote health and safety and minimise accidents in the construction industry. Completion of a course can bring peace of mind to construction workers and help them to better understand the risks contained within their job.
