NVQ Level 5 explained

If you are keen to progress in your health and safety career, there are a number of routes open to you. One of the most popular is NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. Indeed, this is the UK’s premier vocational qualification specifically designed for people who want to attain Chartered status of IOSH. Unlike the examination-based NEBOSH Diploma academic route, this is a practical approach and many individuals find it more suitable.

Of course, before you sign up to start an NVQ Health and Safety like this, you’ll want to know exactly what’s involved. Basically, the diplomas comprise ten individual units and these are all mandatory if you wish to attain the full award. These units make up 108 credits.

For example, one of the sections focuses on the development and implementation of effective communication systems for health and safety information. This totals eight credits. Another unit concerns the promotion of a positive health and safety culture and five credits are awarded for this.

The most credits (18) are given in relation to the identification, assessment and control of health and safety risks. It’s no wonder that such emphasis is placed on this component of the NVQ Level 5. After all, the ability to effectively identify and mitigate dangers in the workplace is of paramount importance.

How long it takes to complete an NVQ Health and Safety of this kind depends on you and how fast you progress, but the average time scale is between 15 and 18 months.

NVQ Level 5 Health and Safety

The health and safety NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) has five levels. Those without experience in the field have to start from the bottom, but the level 3 qualification is aimed at those with some experience in health and safety. You will need to have been actively involved in developing workplace safety policies, either at the company that employs you or elsewhere. To take the level 4 course, health and safety will have to be your bread and butter – you’ll need to have responsibilities in that area, and they’ll need to be fairly significant. To take the level 5 NVQ, you’ll need to be engaged in health and safety at a high level and have significant experience.

The NVQ level 5 health and safety course is designed to certify senior health and safety professionals, and ensure that the managers and supervisors at the top of the chain have the right knowledge to ensure compliance all the way down to the most basic level. Everything from developing policies to implementation, management of limited financial health and safety resources, and promoting a culture of health and safety amongst the workforce is covered.

Many of our trainers hold high-level NVQ qualifications. They have the required industry experience and are fully certified (by the NVQ and other schemes) to perform health and safety risk assessments, to perform audits, and to devise health and safety strategies. They also have the necessary teaching experience, so book a course from us and you’ll be taught by people who have the right knowledge and understand how to pass it on.
