Manual Handling Training – Why is it Important?
Safety in the workplace is of the utmost importance. It ensures that employees can go about their work without risk of injury and that companies don’t have the risk of litigation from injured employees. Health and safety courses exist to inform staff and employers how to be risk-free in the workplace. There are safety courses in a variety of different areas depending on the nature of the work undertaken. One of the most important is in manual handling.Manual handling presents some of the biggest risks in the world of work. It is estimated that around 30 per cent of work related injuries are caused by manual handling, with around 300,000 employees every year suffering from back pain caused by lifting incorrectly. Lifting injuries, while most commonly occurring in the back, can also occur in the legs, arms and even the heart. These injuries can take a long time to heal and have a profound effect on long term health.Manual handing training teaches employees how to lift correctly. It is beneficial to many different kinds of employees, even those whose jobs don’t involve heavy lifting. The training covers any activity that involves pushing, pulling, moving, carrying or restraining an object, person or animal. The courses will give employees an understanding of manual handling regulations, ergonomics and the principles of good body movement when lifting.Training in manual handling will inform employees and encourage them to take responsibility for their own safety. By sending staff of training courses, employers can help ensure the safety of their workers and reduce business hours lost to injury.

Third Party Risk Assessments Make a Huge Difference
These days, risk assessments are an important element of business. After all, while the point of running companies may be to generate profit, the safety of workers and members of the public is even more crucial.
Effective assessments of danger can help prevent many accidents from occurring, saving a great deal of human suffering as a result. Essentially, they involve anticipating problems that may occur so that action can be taken to mitigate such risks.
This is simple in principle and as long as firms stick to them and perform them on a regular basis, they should be able to keep workplace dangers down to an absolute minimum. That said, it can sometimes be tricky for staff members to see the dangers in front of them because they are so used to their offices, factories and so on.
This is where a third-party workplace risk assessment comes into its own. For example, here at Phoenix Health and Safety, we are experts in the field and can come around to your site to offer key insights.
It is helpful to have a fresh pair of eyes looking over your premises, as they may pick up on things missed by yourself and your employees. And, by choosing specialists with much skill and experience in the field, you can rest assured that no stone will be left unturned.
To find out more about how our risk consultants may be able to help you, simply take a look around our website. When it comes to safety issues, there’s no time like the present.

When You Hire a Fifth Employee
Any small business should consider taking on more staff a cause for celebration. Those in charge should be proud of their status as a small but growing concern. However, when any company reaches a certain size it’s required by law to meet some extra health and safety regulations. Depending on the industry and what work is undertaken by your staff, first aid at work requirements may change, for example.
When any business hires its fifth member of staff, they are also required to perform certain checks to ensure that the enlarged workforce has a safe and healthy place to operate in, and that working practices do not involve an unacceptable or unanticipated level of danger. Full risk assessments must be performed. They should take into account the chance of an accident occurring and the potential severity of that accident. Any hazards (for example heavy machinery) must be identified and there potential to harm staff or members of the public considered.
Fire risks should be included, as should any potentially hazardous substances covered by COSHH legislation. Manual handling risks need to be assessed and even the problems associated with long-term computer use examined. There are many factors involved and each one must be carefully treated to ensure no hazard slips through the net.
The assessment must be in written form, and it must be updated as circumstances change or simply as time goes by. The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone. Safety consultants like Phoenix can either perform all the necessary assessments for you or help you get through the process as quickly and simply as possible.
