1. INTRODUCING WORKING SAFELY
Workers often make the mistake of assuming that accidents only happen to ‘other people’. This module stresses the realities of the human suffering behind the statistics and it emphasises the importance of taking personal responsibility.
2. DEFINING HAZARD AND RISK
This module puts the words ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ into everyday language and it uses familiar examples to show what can happen. Importantly, it makes it clear that even simple and repetitive tasks can go wrong, with potentially serious consequences. Focusing on the 6 broad hazard groups, delegates are asked to consider the dangers they come across in their own work. The term ‘risk assessment’ is demystified and delegates learn that everyone carries out informal assessments on a daily basis.
3. IDENTIFYING COMMON HAZARDS
All the main issues are covered in this module, including entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise and the working environment, slips, trips and falls, and manual handling. Each area of focus is backed up by clear examples and recognisable scenarios, and useful summaries reinforce the key points.
4. IMPROVING SAFETY PERFORMANCE
This module examines systems and processes, ensuring that any jargon is explained in easily understood terms. The session helps to bridge the gap between management and workforce, encouraging delegates to get involved in processes that are commonly seen as the sole responsibility of managers or supervisors. Other areas are focused on from the delegates’ perspectives. These include contract work, inspections, safe systems and permits, protective equipment, signage, emergency procedures, reporting and health checks.
5. PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Last but not least, delegates receive a short but effective introduction to waste and pollution. This leads into a look at how organisations and individuals can get involved in reducing environmental harm. The points are emphasised by memorable and thought-provoking facts and figures.
Candidates who successfully complete the written and practical assessments have a choice of accreditation. They can either opt for an IOSH Working Safely certificate or an IOSH passport card.
