Why choose a NEBOSH qualification?

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health is a UK-based independent examination board delivering vocational qualifications in health, safety and environmental practice and management.

In its 40 plus years of existence, more than 400,000 people globally have gained a NEBOSH qualification. Their qualifications are taken by people working in all types of industries, as well as national and local government organisations.

The NEBOSH Construction Certificate course consists of three assessments:

  • An open book examination for Unit 1 (NG1 – Management of Health & Safety)
  • A written examination for Unit 2 (NCC1 – Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities)
  • A practical assessment carried out at your place of work (NCC2), to demonstrate that you can apply what you have learnt during the course to a real workplace.

What is an Open Book Exam?

An open book exam assesses the same learning outcomes as an invigilated, paper-based exam. With an open book exam, you can have access to textbooks, course notes and the internet.

You can complete an open book exam in your own home, or another suitable location. You will have up to 24 hours to complete the NEBOSH open book exam, but we find that most candidates only take 4 – 5 hours.

The open book exam will assess your ability to apply your knowledge, as well as testing your analytical and critical thinking skills.

What is a closing interview?

Following the open book exam is a short closing interview, which takes approximately 15 minutes. The purpose of the interview is to confirm that the work you have submitted is your own and that you did not have any assistance in completing your NEBOSH assessment.

The closing interview takes place via video call, which you can access via smartphone, tablet or computer.

The interviewer will ask to see identification, you need to provide either your passport, driving license or national identity card. The interviewer needs to see the room that you are in to ensure you don’t have access to notes during the interview.

The interviewer will ask you questions based on your open book exam, your work and your submission.

Your closing interview is not an assessment, so you won’t receive a mark. If the interviewer is happy that the work is your own, your mark will be published in line with NEBOSH timeframes.

For more information, visit the NEBOSH guide to Open Book Exams.

External examiners mark all assessments and are appointed by NEBOSH. Each examiner is chosen for their experience and expertise, ensuring candidates are assessed by the best in our industry.

On successful completion of both units and the practical assessment, we will award a NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. This is sent by post and usually arrives within 8-10 weeks after Phoenix publishes the results.

After completing this course, you will be eligible for Technician Membership of The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), as well as associate membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

If you are studying the NEBOSH National Construction Certificate through classroom learning or in-house learning, the cost of the exam is included.

If you are studying via online or distance learning, you don’t pay for your exam upfront, you pay for the exam when you’re ready to book.

Exams need to be booked separately from the course – book NEBOSH exams here

Marianne, Health and Safety Manager, NEBOSH National General Construction Certificate (Conversion):

“I had a great experience with Phoenix whilst studying for my NEBOSH Construction Conversion Certificate. Every element of the course from booking, delivery of the training through to the final examination was to a high standard and well organised.

NEBOSH training requires hard work and determination, but having a supportive, enthusiastic tutor made all the difference. The NEBOSH Construction Conversion course was intense at times with a lot of information to try and learn and retain in a short space of time, but the Phoenix tutor did a great job at keeping me engaged and focused over the full course. The course materials were of a very high standard, and we were also given additional online resources including study plans, brain maps and past examination papers.

The NEBOSH Construction Certificate was hard work, but I enjoyed the course and was delighted to successfully complete it with a distinction.

As a Health and Safety Manager and a member of IOSH, every new qualification helps with progressing my CPD as I work towards chartered membership.”

Peter, Senior Information Officer, NEBOSH National General Construction Certificate:

“I studied the NEBOSH Construction Certificate via classroom learning, and it was a fantastic experience. I would recommend the classroom learning option, as the NEBOSH course tutor is fantastic and being able to ask questions face-to-face meant that the course content was easier to relate to and understand. I am pleased to say that I got a distinction in my exams and I can honestly say it would have been so much harder without the support and assistance of Phoenix Health and Safety.

This NEBOSH qualification allows me to continue my accreditation path and demonstrate my commitment to health and safety to my customers. The NEBOSH Construction course has really inspired me to go further in H&S and I’m now looking at studying the NEBOSH National Diploma with Phoenix.”
