The National Diploma increases candidates' ability to help organisations make sensible and proportionate decisions in managing risks. This supports their business objectives and regulatory requirements – delivering positive change in the modern workplace.

Who is the NEBOSH Diploma suitable for?

The Phoenix NEBOSH Diploma classroom course is ideal for health and safety professionals wishing to advance their career and create a safer working environment. A degree-level qualification can also increase promotion prospects and earning potential.

As a Diploma candidate, you are likely to have already completed either the NEBOSH National General Certificate or the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety, however, there are no formal entry requirements.

A number of UK universities accept the NEBOSH Diploma as meeting their entry criteria for MSc-level courses, so it provides a clear route to masters-level postgraduate study.

Course programme and duration

The NEBOSH National Diploma classroom course requires seven weeks of tuition. If you can't commit to such a period of study, the Phoenix NEBOSH National Diploma Distance Learning course provides a more flexible alternative. An In-House course is also available, ideal for employers who wish to train several candidates simultaneously. Please call us on 0345 500 8811 to discuss these options further.

What are the key topics covered?

• Management of health and safety at work.
• The key UK legal frameworks for health and safety, including the essential elements of health and safety systems.
• Identifying and controlling risk associated with hazardous agents, workplace issues and equipment.
• Management of workplace stress.
• The importance of human factors in reducing incidents.

How the course units are split

The qualification is divided into four units, three taught and one practical, each assessed separately:

• Unit A: Managing health and safety.
• Unit B: Hazardous agents in the workplace.
• Unit C: Workplace and work equipment safety.
• Unit DNI: Application of health and safety management in the workplace.

Assessment and certification

A separate unit certificate is awarded for each unit passed. Each of the three taught units is assessed by a written 3-hour examination. Exams take place at Phoenix Health & Safety venues in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Unit DNI involves a workplace-based assessment that tests the practical application of knowledge gained in units A, B and C. Assessment for Unit D involves undertaking a full health and safety audit of a company of your choosing (ideally your own).

The NEBOSH Diploma is comparable to NQF/QCF Level 6 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What can the Diploma lead to?

Holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety are entitled to use the designatory letters DipNEBOSH.

The Diploma meets the academic requirements to apply for membership of many professional bodies, including Graduate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH) and full membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

For National Diploma holders wishing to use their skills overseas, the NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is an excellent option.
