The CITB SSSTS refresher course is suitable for site managers, agents, and other construction industry professionals who have gained the SSSTS accreditation in the past five years. Each SSSTS certificate lapses after five years, so the fresher course must be completed before that date. If the certificate is allowed to expire, you can only regain it by retaking the full SSSTS course.

Our Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme Refresher is a one-day course.

This highly interactive, remote classroom course allows you to study your SSSTS refresher online and incorporates case studies, classroom discussion, group work, and individual or group presentations. Subjects covered are:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act and HSE regulations

  • Control measures and risk assessments

  • Legal responsibilities of site supervisors

  • Specific site issues that challenge supervisors daily

  • Useful toolbox talks (a short presentation on a specific area of health and safety, presented by the candidates)

  • Supervision of occupational health

  • Behavioural safety

The SSSTS Refresher covers the following key areas, refreshing candidates knowledge on them:

  • Enhanced awareness of site health and safety issues

  • Improved knowledge of any recent construction legislation developments — plus health, safety, welfare and environmental issues

  • Identify measures that will assist in the practical implementation of their responsibilities, as established by new legislation and changing working practices

  • Gain a better understanding of health and safety risks

  • Demonstrate and apply the principles of safe workplace practices

  • Understand the principles behind a risk assessment

  • Conduct a thorough risk assessment

The SSSTS refresher course includes two assessments:

  • A multiple-choice examination paper

  • Continuous assessment during exercises

Each SSSTS certificate should be renewed every five years via the refresher course. This is to allow for changes in technology, legislation, environmental management, and cultural behaviour that may influence best practice in the construction industry.

Candidates can also progress to the Site Management Safety Training Scheme course.
