What is the Site Managers' Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)?

Ideal for anyone currently in or applying for a role with responsibility for organising, monitoring, and administering groups of workers on construction sites, our SMSTS (Site Managers’ Safety Training Scheme) course covers the core health and safety challenges faced in construction.

Across the five-day course, delegates will learn how to identify and manage the workplace risks associated with the construction industry.

Many candidates take the SMSTS course to build upon their existing knowledge and advance their career in construction.

We’ve designed the Site Manager Course for construction industry professionals, including project managers, site managers and supervisors, business owners and anyone with management responsibilities in the industry.

There are no formal entry requirements.

Our Site Managers' Safety Training Scheme can be studied in-house across 5 days.

This five-day classroom course covers the following topics:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM Regulations 2015.

  • Site set-up.

  • Risk assessments and method statements.

  • Working at height.

  • The health and safety implications of working with scaffolding, electricity, excavations, demolition, and confined spaces.

  • Any recent changes in accepted working practices and behavioural safety.

  • Changes in accepted working practices.

The key learning outcomes covered by the SMSTS classroom course are as follows:

  • Managing on-site safety in accordance with the law.

  • Managing on-site safety in the context of your management or supervisory role.

  • Developing an understanding of your responsibilities for site health, safety, and welfare.

  • Recognising that a safe site is efficient, economical, and productive.

  • At the end of the training programme, you will be able to:

  • Understand all health, safety, welfare, and environmental legislation that affects your daily work.

  • Implement new guidance and industry best practices.

  • State your duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare, and the environment.

The SMSTS course consists of two assessments:

  • An examination paper, with 20 multiple choice questions, and five short written questions.

  • A trainer review.

The trainer review focusses on the candidate’s contribution and behaviour during the five days, and includes three elements:

  • The candidate’s performance in group exercises.

  • Candidate engagement — providing answers/suggestions during the course.

  • Core exercises completed — the candidate must prepare and deliver four core exercises around specific areas of site health and safety.

You won’t receive a course certificate without full attendance. Anyone unable to complete the course due to sickness or other circumstances must enrol on a new course and attend all five days again.

SMSTS candidates are encouraged to refresh their knowledge every three years with the SMSTS Refresher course.

  • Where can I study an SSSTS or SMSTS course?

Previously, our SSSTS and SMSTS training courses could be studied at venues across the UK, including Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton and London, but we have recently adapted both courses to allow students to study remotely from wherever they prefer.

You can now study towards an SSSTS or SMSTS training course via remote learning - the course is completed online, from your home, workplace, or any other location of your choice.

  • When and how will I receive my SMSTS/SSSTS results and certificate?

Results and certificates are provided by CITB within four weeks of completing the course.

  • Is lunch included for classroom courses?

Yes, lunch and refreshments are included for full-day and multi-day training courses.

  • Are there any entry requirements for SMSTS?

No, but it is recommended for candidates to have passed the SSSTS course, or to have some basic understanding/knowledge of construction site safety.

  • What is the pass mark for the SMSTS exam?

The examination pass mark is 80%, There are 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short, written questions. Five safety-critical questions in the exam paper must all be answered correctly to pass.

For the last ten minutes of the exam, candidates are permitted to use Construction Site Safety – The Comprehensive Guide (GE700) and The Construction Site Management Delegate Workbook (XA6).

  • How long is the SMSTS/SSSTS exam?

The examination takes 30 minutes.

  • What happens if I fail the SMSTS examination or trainer review?

We have an excellent pass rate of 95 percent. However, the exam can be re-taken within 90 days if necessary.

If a candidate passes the trainer review but fails the final examination, the candidate may re-sit the examination (depending on their mark).

If a candidate scores less than 69% in the examination, they must attend the full course again, before re-sitting the examination.
