The course is suitable for anyone wanting to learn about effective environmental practices, ideal for employers wanting to raise awareness about the environment within their organisation.

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH Award in Environmental Awareness at Work. However, NEBOSH recommends learners have a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

When studied in the Classroom, Virtual Classroom or in-house, the NEBOSH Award in Environmental Awareness at Work is one-day long.

Upon completing the course, students will have an understanding of:

The NEBOSH Award in Environmental Awareness at Work consists of one unit.

Unit EAW1:

Element 1: Foundations of Environmental Awareness

  • 1.1- Identify the meaning of: the environment; weather; climate; habitats; ecosystems; biodiversity; pollution; sustainability

  • 1.2- Identify the importance and benefits of sustainable development

  • 1.3- Identify an environmental management system’s main components and the certification process

Element 2: Pollution, Impact Assessments and Emergencies

  • 2.1- Recognise the principles and practice of impact assessments

  • 2.2- Identify the main sources, types, controls and impacts of air pollution

  • 2.3- Identify the main sources, types, controls and impacts of water pollution

  • 2.4- Identify the main sources, controls and impacts of environmental noise

  • 2.5- Identify waste types

  • 2.6- Identify the waste control hierarchy and ways to effectively manage waste

  • 2.7- Recognise the measures that need to be in place when dealing with the main types of environmental emergency

The course is assessed through a 30-minute, multiple choice assessment. It is completed online and consists of 20 questions, which are marked by NEBOSH and returned to students within 15 working days. To pass the assessment, students need to score 60%, equivalent to getting 12 of the 20 questions correct.

Many students who study the NEBOSH Award in Environmental Awareness at Work progress to studying the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate, which expands on the content taught in this course.
