NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice
The NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a bachelor’s degree-level qualification. It is for people whose responsibilities include developing and implementing health and safety procedures within their workplace. This qualification is more advanced than the Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Health and Safety, which is a foundation degree.
NVQs are the UK’s premier vocational qualification, ideal if you prefer a practical, evidence-based approach to learning that takes place within your working environment — as an alternative to academic study.
Completing the NVQ Level 6 allows health and safety practitioners to apply enhanced knowledge to their work environment.
Who is this course suitable for?
The NVQ Level 6 course is the perfect choice if you’re in a senior position and wish to gain a degree-level qualification while continuing to hold a demanding role. You are likely to have already earned a Level 3 qualification, such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate.
Many candidates pursue NVQ Level 6 with the help of employer sponsorship. They then report back to the board on the company’s health and safety status.
The Level 6 NVQ is work-based, and your tutor support is done remotely, which means that NVQ Level 6 courses can be undertaken anywhere in the world.
Phoenix will allocate a dedicated course manager to you for the duration of the course, who will conduct your initial assessment and induction. This can take place face-to-face, by telephone, or online.
NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is a distance learning and assessment programme. For this course, your work and evidence are submitted electronically — either via a cloud-based system or by email.
Support and training from your manager are provided principally through telephone calls, Skype, and emails. Your course manager is a dedicated resource, always ready to offer help and advice on a one-to-one basis.
There are ten mandatory modules to complete before the NVQ Level 6 Diploma can be awarded; these align with the ten learning outcomes.
Courses are generally completed over a 12 to 18-month period, with a recommended total of 1,064 hours of study. Additional support can be purchased if you require more time to complete your qualification.

Before starting the programme, you will be asked to complete a self-assessment to identify:
- Specific training needs.
- Support and guidance requirements.
- Units that have already been completed, or existing credits that have been accumulated.
This assessment helps to establish whether you require any additional training before tackling the units. If necessary, you will need to develop a plan with your manager to gain competence in the relevant areas before attempting the units.
Assessment and portfolio
Each candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that they have achieved all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.
Once you gather evidence for each of the ten units, your assessor will make sure that you meet all the requirements. Once the assessor is satisfied, your work will be forwarded to the invigilators. We will not submit any work that we believe might not lead to a pass.
Payment Plans are offered to self-funding UK students only. We require 30% of the total course fee upfront. Payments will be made monthly from the day your deposit was made and must be received within 7 days of this date. The balance of your account must be cleared in full, prior to you registering for examinations. Payment plans can be paid by: Credit/debit card or bank transfer. If you would like to organise a payment plan please get in touch.
