NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work

A practical introduction to managing risk in the workplace, the NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work provides delegates with the skills needed to conduct effective risk assessments.

What is the NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work?

Developed by NEBOSH in collaboration with the UK’s Health & Safety Executive, the NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work provides a practical introduction to managing workplace risk and the hazards which cause them.

The one-day course provides the skills and knowledge needed for delegates to carry out effective risk assessments, identifying workplace hazards and evaluating the danger they pose to workers, visitors, and the public. Delegates will also learn how to propose and implement control measures to reduce these risks, equipping them with everything necessary to make the workplace safer for themselves and fellow employees.

As an introductory course that establishes a foundation for conducting effective risk assessments, the course is suitable for any employees with health and safety responsibilities, particularly those who are required to carry out or supervise risk assessments. This includes managers, supervisors, workers aspiring to health and safety roles and organisation leaders.

The NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work is suitable for any employees with risk management responsibilities, whether they be workers, managers, supervisors, or business leaders.

When studied in-house, the duration of this course is 1 day.

  • Element 1: Why manage health and safety risks

  • Element 2: Managing risk- Identifying and understanding the risks, and controlling the risks

  • Element 3: Managing risk- Sources of information and the application of HSE risk assessment tools

By the end of the course the delegates will understand:

  • The reasons for managing health and safety risks including competence of those involved and the importance of consultation with relevant workers.

  • Effectively manage risk, which will involve identification and understanding of risk potential and its control.

  • Where to find sources of information to help identify and manage risk, and the application of the HSE risk assessment tools.

The course is assessed via a practical assessment after the course programme is complete. Delegates watch a video showing them around a workplace and then complete a risk assessment based on what they’ve seen. This assessment will include identifying hazards, determining the level of risk they pose and identifying control measures which can be used to mitigate the risk.

After submitting this risk assessment, it will be marked and returned in 24 working days. Successful candidates receive a certificate to evidence their completion of the course.

Many delegates who complete the NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment consider studying further health and safety qualifications to build their skills and knowledge. To these delegates we recommend the NEBOSH National General Certificate, as it builds on the knowledge established in this course, covering more areas of health and safety.
