What is the IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher?

The IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher training course provides staff in managerial positions with a recap of the core elements of IOSH Managing Safely®. This includes areas such as how to identify, evaluate and control workplace risks, as well as how to evaluate safety systems and strategies in the workplace.

By refreshing their knowledge on these topics, candidates will develop confidence in promoting proper safety practices. In addition, They will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on their safety practices since completing the initial training. The course also updates candidate’s knowledge in line with any relevant changes to legislation, standards and good practice guidance.

The Phoenix Pass Pledge 

Every Phoenix IOSH course entitles you to continue studying free of charge if you fail to meet the required standard in examinations. However, this is rarely necessary as our pass rate for IOSH courses is above industry average.   

The IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher course is aimed at anyone who has previously gained the IOSH Managing Safely®️ qualification, and now wishes to refresh their knowledge via online study. The course is compulsory for everyone who passes an IOSH Managing Safely®️ course, and must be studied within 3 years of completing your initial course.

The duration of the IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher course depends on the study method: 

  • When studied in-house or through Virtual Classroom, the course length is 1 day. 

  • When studied via E-learning, we recommend spending between 5 and 10 hours on the course.

Our classroom course timings are 09:00-17:00 Monday - Friday.

The IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher course includes 6 study units: 

  • Module 1: Thinking back – reflect on full Managing Safely course. 

  • Module 2: Leadership. 

  • Module 3: Plan – review and deliver policy. 

  • Module 4: Do – undertake risk assessment. 

  • Module 5: Check – review data types. 

  • Module 6: Act – applying lessons learnt in the workplace. 

The Refresher Course aims to achieve the following Learning Objectives:

  • Refresh knowledge gained from the Managing Safely® course. 

  • Build on existing understanding and capabilities. 

  • Understand how good leadership can influence in health and safety. 

  • Manage health and safety in the workplace more effectively. 

  • Refresh knowledge of crucial health and safety terms. 

  • Update understanding of the critical benefits and components of a health and safety management system. 

  • Review the different types of performance measurements. 

  • Identify how the law can affect health and safety in the workplace. 

  • Assess, reduce and control risk in the workplace. 

  • Learn how to apply risk profiling in an organisation. 

  • Understand the importance of lessons learnt and continuous improvement. 

The IOSH Managing Safely®️ Refresher is assessed by a multiple-choice examination, in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learnt.  

A certificate is awarded upon completion.  

To book this course you must have passed the IOSH Managing Safely®️ course previously.

Many who study the IOSH Managing Safely consider studying the NEBOSH General Certificate, or if you live outside the UK, the NEBOSH International General Certificate. Being the industry standard for health and safety specialists, the qualification is also ideal for those looking to begin a career in health and safety.

Do I need to pay for IOSH membership?

Candidates do not need to buy IOSH membership to complete one of our IOSH courses.

Are there any entry requirements for an IOSH course?

There are no entry requirements for IOSH Working Safely, Managing Safely or Leading Safely.

When will I receive my IOSH certificate?

Your IOSH certificate is sent via post and usually arrives within 2-3 weeks of completing your IOSH course.

If I complete an IOSH course am I entitled to an IOSH membership?

Completing an IOSH course does not provide you with an IOSH membership, although this is something you might want to consider separately.

What happens if I fail the IOSH assessment?

The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost.
