A London-based metal packaging company has been fined after a worker trapped his hand in a power press and lost two fingers.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard how an employee of Roberts Metal Packaging Limited suffered severe damage to his left hand after getting his hand trapped underneath the punch on a mechanical power-press.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the company had failed to prevent access to this dangerous part of the machinery.
Roberts Metal Packaging Limited of Nathan Way, London pleaded guilty, to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and were fined £7,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,520.
Phoenix comment “Work equipment injuries are common, and entrapment hazards one of the most frequent. Power presses and similar equipment are very dangerous – the risks need to be thoroughly assessed and adequate control measures implemented.”
