Who is the NEBOSH Diploma for?

The NEBOSH Diploma is an ideal qualification for health, safety and environmental practitioners who wish to advance their careers. This includes safety managers, advisors and consultants.

The Diploma also acts as a stepping-stone to postgraduate study, as many UK MSc programmes accept it as a full or partial entry requirement.

While there are no formal entry requirements, before registering for the National Diploma, we recommend first completing one of the following courses:

Where does the Diploma fit in with other NEBOSH training courses and qualifications?

When combined with further professional development, the NEBOSH Diploma meets the standards required to achieve Chartered Safety Practitioner (CMIOSH) status. It builds directly on the knowledge gained in the NEBOSH National General Certificate and the NEBOSH National Construction Certificate.

On completion of the NEBOSH National Diploma, you will be entitled to use “DipNEBOSH” after your name and apply for Graduate Membership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH). It also allows full membership to the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

GradIOSH and IIRSM membership increases your employability with organisations looking for skilled and knowledgeable health and safety personnel.

What are the benefits of the NEBOSH Diploma?

This qualification assists in the development of professional competence, increasing candidates' ability to help organisations manage risk and meet regulatory requirements.

The NEBOSH Diploma covers the practical skills that are essential to health and safety professionals. We assess candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and teach them how to deliver positive change in the workplace.

Study method

Distance learning benefits

The principal advantage of undertaking the NEBOSH Diploma distance learning course is flexibility.

You can study at your own pace, in your own time, and fit the studies around work and other commitments. Furthermore, there is no need to complete the course in one sitting. This makes it straightforward to suspend study then come back to it when convenient.

What does distance learning with Phoenix involve?

This NEBOSH Diploma course has been designed by Phoenix to bridge the gap between traditional distance learning courses and e-learning.

The way the programme materials are delivered can be modified to meet the preferences of different students. For example, those who do not wish to use computers can choose a more traditional distance learning style with textbooks, written assignments and telephone support. We would, however, recommend making the most of our online resources.

Candidates who are comfortable with online learning have a wide variety of extra support, including:

• Regular live webinars with a Phoenix tutor discussing Diploma programme content and students joining in the discussion as it happens.
• Webinars are recorded for other students to watch later.
• Interactive materials with activities, mind maps and video tutorials.
• Lists of website links to further reading and related online articles and documents.
• A Facebook group where Phoenix Health and Safety distance learners can discuss the course and connect.
• The Phoenix Health and Safety YouTube channel with video clips and presentations.
• Telephone, email and Skype support from expert tutors.
• Online revision interactions to test knowledge.

Alternatives to distance learning

At Phoenix, we also offer the NEBOSH National Diploma as a classroom course.

The Phoenix Pass Pledge is another plus, ensuring that if candidates fail to reach the required standard in examinations, they can continue to study free of charge. This is rarely required, however, with pass rates well above the industry average.

The Phoenix Facebook community group is also especially popular with candidates, providing a place for support and discussion.

Janine, Fire Industry, Office Manager, NEBOSH National Diploma:

“I really enjoyed studying the NEBOSH Diploma with Phoenix. It has allowed me to significantly develop in my job role and I am now more aware of the regulations and responsibilities within my organisation. The NEBOSH Diploma has made me feel more confident in writing risk assessments as I can apply specialist, in-depth knowledge regarding appropriate controls.

The support from Phoenix is incredible. I studied via distance learning and I was struggling with some elements of the unit, the tutors contacted me straight away to guide me through the course material. The practice papers were marked quickly with immediate feedback throughout. Without the support from Phoenix in the lead up to the exam, I would have struggled to achieve the result that I did.

Thanks to the NEBOSH Diploma, my opportunities for career progression within the Health and Safety field have increased. Having this NEBOSH qualification also gives my organisation and its customers confidence that I take health and safety seriously.

Thank you, Phoenix, for the support and encouragement provided by the tutors, they are on hand any time for help and guidance.”
